Nursing Department

TEAS Testing

What is the TEAS test?

The TEAS test is a common preadmission test used by many nursing programs. TEAS, stands for Test of Essential Academic Skills, which is a basic aptitude test designed to measure entry level skills and abilities of nursing program applicants. There are four sections to this online timed assessment:

Reading: paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions

Math: whole numbers, metric conversion, fraction and decimals, algebraic equations, Percentages, and ratio/proportions and graphs

Science: basic aspects of earth, physical and biological sciences

English: measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling

When can I take the TEAS test?

TEAS testing will be scheduled at either the OLC Nursing Building located in Pine Ridge or the He Sapa College Center in Rapid City, at specified times. After the OLC Nursing Department receives all completed applications in January, applicants are contacted in February (based on contact information provided on applications), regarding registration, practice exams and test dates for the following months.

How it works

You will first take an online practice test. After taking the online practice test, you will be provided with a score report that will highlight a list of topics to review based upon your performance. Take time to analyze your score report and focus your review on your weaker subjects. These topics will link to information sources within the Study Manual that you were given the opportunity to check out from the OLC Nursing Department, or you may purchase one yourself through www.ati.com. Re-evaluate yourself with a second version of the online practice test. The practice test consist of 150 questions patterned after the actual TEAS V exam. (Assessment Technologies Institute,LLC , 2014).

Be prepared. You cannot use calculators or cell phones during the actual examination.

Understanding the Results

Students receive a print out of the results after completion of the TEAS. The scores are then reviewed by the OLC Nursing Department Admissions committee. Many nursing schools require specific scores to be accepted into their program. You should check with the nursing school you are applying to ahead of time to see what specific admissions requirements they may have.
